For those who can get their hands on the current issue of Seoul magazine, Robert Koehler has a really good interview with You Hong-june who is director of the Korean government's Cultural Heritage Administration. He has long championed improving the apathy many Koreans have about their cultural heritage and has been the driving force in fixing many historical sites and improving access to the the for the general public. Korea actually is filled with many cultural sites it is just they are not well known. The city of Gyeongju is really quite an impressive place to visit with its many ancient Shilla tombs, buildings, artifacts, and temples. Buyeo is another city filled with similar sites from the ancient Baekje kindgom. Seoul has a lot of potential with its many historical sites combined with the many natural features that surround the city to be an international attraction. However, it will never happen until the chaotic nature of the city improves along with cleaning up all the pollution. Seoul is going in the right direction at least with Mayor Oh's current campaign to green the city that was begun under Lee Myung-bak.

Nobody really thinks that the area they grew up in is that "special" because they see it every day and it becomes ordinary. Growing up in New Hampshire I was always surprised by the "idiots" who came up just to look at red and orange leaves on the trees in the fall. Now I miss that.

There is much to see and learn about Korea. It's true history is long and rich in tradition and is intertwined with the Chinese and Japanese, but is unique in many ways.
